Ancient Genesis of Backgammon

Backgammon is known for being the oldest board game recorded in history. The popularity and evolution of the backgammon game has passed through many ancient times and rulers. Backgammon is known for having the longest global history.

Backgammon's origin has been traced to have originated from Mesopotamia during the Persian Empire. The ancient way of playing backgammon is done through the use of wood surfaces and stones were used as markers. The dice used for backgammon during this ancient time are made up from wood, stones or pottery. Egyptians, Romans, Persians and Sumerians are believed to have played the game of backgammon in their own unique ways.

The ancient history of backgammon is revealed with the artifacts found from excavated relics. Additionally, the literary references associated backgammon to the aristocrat leader of the ancient times and the game of backgammon has acquired a name called The Game of Thirty Squares or Senat for short. The wooden boards were also found from the tomb of Ur al Chaldees on 2600BC. Backgammon was played with a tetrahedral dice and was known to be The Royal Games of Ur at that time.

Backgammon was played during the Roman times as The Games of 12 Lines using leather boards. 15 ebony and 15 ivory totals the 30 markers used for this game. The game was believed to have been derived from the Senat version of Egypt. When the Roman conquered Britain on the 1st Century, backgammon was introduced to Britain as Tabula named after the generic board used to play the game. The Tabula version of backgammon conquered the heart of Emperor Claudius who wrote a history about Tabula. The imperial carriage used by Emperor Claudius was equipped with a Tabula playing board which he plays while traveling.

The Tabula game swept Romania as a popular gambling game but was later declared illegal by the Republic. The anti-gambling law fine was imposed to all gambling forms equivalent to 4 times the stakes but such law was sporadically and weakly imposed. Backgammon revolved into a game called Alea on the 16th Century which means the art of gambling with dice. The contemporary backgammon game was believed to have taken from Alea as its first precursor. Backgammon then was introduced with different variations in terms of the starting positions and movements of the game.

Backgammon has acquired popularity during the ancient times where royalties are believed to have been its greatest avid fan. Being a favorite game for population coming from the upper class society, backgammon's ancient history has literary and excavated proofs that it has been present since the ancient time and still raving as a popular game of today's time.
